It is said that no one will forget Ireland once one been there – and there really seems to be something to it. The landscape of Ireland has a mythical aura, not only because of the almost tangible history, but also because Ireland is the original home of fairies and elves. Certainly, the weather is not always at its best, but in compensation you will get to see a million shades of green on this so called “Green Island”.
After two years break from backpacking I thought it was time to pack my backpack and just hit the road. So in September I got to spend over ten days in Ireland -nine of which on the road. It was first planned as a short trip over a long weekend; but during my planning I extended to ten days and a whole coastal route trip. With my Lonely Planet in the backpack I aimed for the scenic route – Ireland’s most picturesque drives.
The bustling Irish capital of Dublin gave me way to the wild and remote countryside in the Wicklow Mountains and then along the coastal route to Cork. I left Cork and followed the age-caressed landscape on the way to the mystical and unspoiled peninsulas of the southwest before jumping-off for Ireland’s most captivating coastal drives – circling charming Dingle Peninsula to the north, the Iveragh Peninsula along the celebrated Ring of Kerry to the west, and the lesser-known Ring of Beara to the south. I marveled at the world-famous Cliffs of Moher and gave the brooding loneliness of Connemara and the Burren a visit before heading on to the dramatic wildness of County Donegal. Afterwards, I crossed from the Republic to Northern Ireland and explored the troubled history of the now cool and artistic Derry with its looming city walls. Finally, I headed along the breathtaking scenery of the Causeway Coast to Belfast’s glorious Victorian architecture.
I also used Instagram intensively during the whole trip and figure this is a really awesome tool to document one’s trip and also to keep those at home up to date. I was pretty surprised by the photographic possibilities of my iPhone, too. But judge for yourself, I attached them all below.
